Aston Villa boss Unai Emery is looking to inject pace and directness into an attack that will face the demands of Champions League football for the second time in three years.
The Daily Mail reported the interest on Thursday. Villa won the Europa League last week, beating SC Freiburg 2-1 in the final in Stockholm, and secured fourth place in the Premier League on the final day — a result that guarantees them a return to Europe's elite competition next season.
Barnes, 28, finished Newcastle United's season with 16 goals and six assists across 57 appearances in all competitions, including six Champions League goals — a return that matches Anthony Gordon's tally despite Barnes's more inconsistent place in Eddie Howe's starting lineup. His directness, ability to operate on either flank and Premier League experience make him an attractive option for a club that needs wide reinforcement after losing Anthony Gordon to Barcelona and with Jadon Sancho expected to depart.
Newcastle are not willing sellers. The club paid £38 million to sign Barnes from Leicester City in 2023 and want to recover a significant proportion of that fee — with a reported asking price in the region of £35 million to £38 million. Barnes has two years remaining on his contract, which gives Newcastle leverage but also adds pressure to act while the fee remains substantial rather than waiting until 2028 when he could leave on a free transfer.
The complication is that Newcastle have already confirmed Gordon's departure and cannot afford to lose both wide forwards in the same summer. Howe's squad would then lack natural width on the left — a problem that would need to be addressed before pre-season regardless.
Villa's case to Barnes is compelling. Champions League football at Villa Park. Family based in the Midlands — Barnes grew up in Hinckley and his family remained in the region throughout his time on Tyneside. And a manager in Emery who has consistently made Villa a more attractive project than their position in the mid-table Premier League era would have suggested was possible.
Squad cost ratio regulations mean Villa must sell before they buy at any significant scale. Morgan Rogers, valued at around £80 million, is the most likely major exit — with Arsenal, Manchester United and Bayern Munich all linked. If that sale is completed, Barnes at Newcastle's asking price becomes financially viable.
