The 34-year-old Danish midfielder fell to the ground in the 65th minute of Denmark's friendly against Ukraine in Odense on June 7, clutching his chest before losing consciousness. The game was abandoned.
The implantable cardioverter-defibrillator fitted after his 2021 cardiac arrest activated and is believed to have worked as intended. Eriksen walked to the ambulance under his own power and was discharged from hospital the following day.
He posted on Instagram on Monday: "I want to let everyone know that I am doing well and am at home with my family. I am grateful for the support and help from all players and medical staff.
"I also want to thank the medical staff who have cared for me and my heart over the past few years."
The Danish Football Federation's team doctor Morten Boesen issued a brief update: "I spoke to Christian this morning and he is doing well. He is with his family and in good spirits. It is expected that he will be discharged soon and can return home."
According to Kicker and Bild, meetings scheduled this week between Eriksen and VfL Wolfsburg to discuss his future โ which had been expected to address a mutual termination โ did not take place because he is still recovering. Those conversations will now be deferred until he is ready.
The decision facing him is not primarily contractual. Wolfsburg hold a contract with the player until the summer of 2027. The question is medical and personal โ whether Eriksen, having now experienced two incidents of this nature during matches, wishes to continue playing professional football.
Eriksen suffered a cardiac arrest in June 2021 during Denmark's European Championship opener against Finland. He was resuscitated on the pitch in Copenhagen, underwent surgery to have an ICD fitted, and returned to professional football with Brentford in February 2022 โ an achievement widely regarded as extraordinary. He subsequently spent three years at Manchester United before joining Wolfsburg last summer on a free transfer.
The June 7 incident drew immediate comparisons to 2021, both visually and medically, though Eriksen himself indicated they felt different. Multiple cardiologists speaking to media outlets have speculated that the ICD activated correctly in response to a genuine event, which would carry different implications for his ability to continue playing than an inappropriate device firing.
No one outside his medical team and family circle knows the answer to that yet. Eriksen is not being rushed to provide one.
