Christoph Spycher will leave his operational role at Young Boys in September 2027, bringing an end to more than a decade in the Swiss club's sporting leadership while retaining a position on its board.

The Bern-based club announced the decision on Thursday, confirming that Spycher will step down as chief of sport after the summer 2027 transfer window. He is expected to remain a minority shareholder and member of the board of directors, allowing him to continue contributing to the club's strategic direction.

The transition will not happen immediately. Young Boys intend to use the coming months to review their sporting structure, identify a successor and ensure the next leadership team is ready to take responsibility.

Spycher said the decision had been difficult but believed the time was approaching to move on after 11 years at the forefront of the club's sporting operations.

“It is a decision that was very difficult for me. But after around 11 years at the head of sporting leadership, it will be a good time to let go, particularly because Young Boys is in a very good position structurally and financially healthy, with a level of stability and continuity that is unusual in this business,” he said.

The 48-year-old also explained that he wanted time to assess his professional future after leaving the day-to-day running of the club.

“I would like to take stock after my operational role at Young Boys comes to an end, to find out what my professional future should look like.”

Spycher took over as sporting director in 2016 and helped oversee a successful period in the club's history, including six Swiss league titles. He moved into his current chief of sport position in 2022.

His departure from the operational role will therefore mark a significant change for Young Boys, although his continued presence on the board is intended to preserve institutional knowledge and continuity.

The club has stressed that the exact handover date will depend on how quickly a successor can be appointed, integrated and brought up to full effectiveness. Technical director Mathieu Beda is expected to retain a key role in the future sporting structure.

Spycher has also made clear that he intends to remain fully involved through the remainder of the current season and the next two transfer windows. He plans to work with Beda on recruitment during the coming winter window and help oversee the summer 2027 market before his expected departure.

His future has recently attracted attention because he was linked with a move to Eintracht Frankfurt, where he had previously played for five years. He was discussed as a possible successor to Markus Krösche, but the latest announcement confirms that he is preparing to leave his operational position at Young Boys rather than immediately take up another role.

The club now has time to plan the succession while retaining Spycher's experience and advice at board level.
