A sold-out St James' Park roared through new signing Nico González's unveiling before Newcastle United needed two late Harvey Barnes goals to survive a scare against Championship side West Brom and reach the Carabao Cup third round.
West Brom stunned the hosts when Isaac Price curled a clever free-kick around the wall and beyond goalkeeper Ewen Jaouen, catching Newcastle out after they had expected a delivery into the box.
Newcastle United levelled shortly before half-time through Bazoumana Toure, who ghosted between two West Brom defenders to score on his competitive debut following his £43m move from Hoffenheim, before Barnes — introduced for Toure at the break — lashed home a rebound to put the hosts ahead.
West Brom responded with a penalty of their own after the ball struck Lewis Hall's hand, with Price coolly sending Jaouen the wrong way to level again, but Barnes settled the tie with a second goal from Amar Dedic's cross to send Newcastle through and spare their side a shootout.
Everton needed far less drama, with Thierno Barry scoring his first hat-trick for the club as David Moyes's side thrashed Preston North End to book a home third-round tie against Wolves. Barry opened the scoring in the 25th minute after a Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall pass set up Vitalii Mykolenko's cross, while summer signing Brennan Johnson also ended his goal drought with his first for the Toffees.
Moyes, a former Preston manager, made only three changes from Everton's opening-weekend win over Crystal Palace, and his strong side comfortably saw off a much-changed Preston team already winless in their first two Championship matches.
Tottenham's rout of Charlton Athletic was capped by a scoring debut off the bench for new signing Savio, whose introduction in the 71st minute — with Spurs already 3-0 up — drew a standing ovation at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.
The Brazilian, signed from Manchester City for an initial £75m, made it 4-0 within 11 minutes of coming on before also playing a part in Ben Davies's fifth in the 85th minute. Mikey Moore had opened the scoring in the 41st minute with his first goal in a Spurs shirt since January 2025, before Dominic Solanke and substitute Kevin Danso added further goals either side of the interval.
Portugal midfielder Mateus Fernandes made his first Spurs start since his £85m move from West Ham, setting up Danso's header, though the Austrian required treatment after being caught in the build-up. Charlton, who brought 6,000 travelling fans and made ten changes from their weekend win at West Ham, got a consolation through Lloyd Jones in the 87th minute.
The result sets up an eye-catching third-round draw for Roberto De Zerbi's side, who will now travel to Liverpool. Tottenham's next fixture, however, is a Premier League trip from Newcastle to the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium this Saturday — by which time Spurs hope to have completed the loan signing of Manchester City forward Omar Marmoush.
