Paul Dummett has been appointed as Newcastle United's new loans manager, taking on his first executive role since retiring last December.

The 34-year-old former defender, a cult hero among Newcastle United supporters during his playing days, has already been tasked with sending four players out on loan for the 2026-27 season as he settles into his new role within the club's recruitment structure.

Dummett's appointment forms part of a wider reshuffle within Newcastle's loans department, which follows former striker Shola Ameobi's move into a newly created role as the club's head of corporate affairs.

Ameobi had overseen Newcastle's loan programme for several years before making the switch, with the restructure also seeing Peter Ramage take over as talent management lead.

Right-back Leo Shahar and striker Sean Neave, both 19, are among the players expected to be sent out on loan this season after attracting interest from clubs in the Championship and League One.

Newcastle's loans department has grown into one of the best-resourced in English football in recent years, reflecting the scale of investment the club has placed in developing young players away from St James' Park before determining whether they have a future in Matthias Jaissle's first-team squad or represent a trading asset further down the line.

Dummett spent the majority of his playing career on Tyneside, making more than 250 appearances across various spells before announcing his retirement in December 2025. His move into an executive role continues a familiar pattern at Newcastle, where former players have increasingly been retained in senior off-field positions as the club looks to blend footballing knowledge with its wider commercial and recruitment ambitions.

The loans structure Dummett now oversees has been viewed as one of the best-resourced in the Premier League, behind only Chelsea in terms of financial investment, and includes support staff spanning physiotherapy, sports psychology, sports science and data analysis alongside the football-focused decision-making.

Getting the club's loan strategy right has taken on added importance in recent years given the role outgoing loan deals play in helping Newcastle manage profit and sustainability regulations, with successful loan spells often paving the way for lucrative permanent sales further down the line.
