Bayern Munich confirmed on Friday that Davies sustained the injury after coming on as a substitute in the 67th minute of Wednesday's 1-1 draw, during which he assisted Harry Kane's equaliser before the problem emerged. The club stated he would be out for "several weeks" β a formulation that places his recovery window uncomfortably close to Canada's tournament opener against Bosnia and Herzegovina at BMO Field in Toronto.
The 25-year-old will miss Bayern's final two Bundesliga matches and the DFB-Pokal final against Stuttgart on May 23. It is the latest in a sequence of setbacks that has reduced him to just 848 minutes of football across 23 appearances this season, with only eight starts.
Davies tore the cruciate ligament in his right knee in a Concacaf Nations League match with Canada in March 2025. He returned in December only to suffer a torn muscle fibre in his thigh in February, then a thigh strain immediately on restarting. This latest hamstring injury, sustained against PSG, is described internally as the most concerning given the proximity to the World Cup.
Bayern head coach Vincent Kompany has spoken repeatedly this season about the mental toll the cycle of injury and return has taken on Davies. At a previous press conference, he addressed the pattern directly.
"Some players can flip the switch after 24 hours, for some it takes a little longer. At some point, I'll still look Phonzy in the eye again and say: 'Come on, just keep going.' You can't be afraid. Fear is the biggest enemy of games, which are often in a circle of injury."
Davies himself spoke publicly about breaking down during his cruciate ligament rehabilitation. "I took a shower and then burst into tears," he said in a YouTube stream that detailed the mental impact of his longest absence.
Sporting director Christoph Freund acknowledged the accumulating frustration.
"He came back well from his serious knee injury, and then muscle injuries have now set him back again and again. He never really got into a rhythm."
Canada's national federation issued an immediate statement confirming direct contact with Bayern's medical team. Jesse Marsch's squad announcement is expected later this month, ahead of friendlies against Uzbekistan on June 1 and Ireland on June 5.
Canada open against Bosnia-Herzegovina, then face Switzerland and Qatar in a home group stage. Davies has 58 caps and 15 goals and is the face of Canadian football β the only world-class player on the roster with sustained Champions League experience. Starting the World Cup without him would fundamentally change what Canada can offer in the group phase.
