The left-back spoke before Leipzigâs Champions League meeting with Real Madrid, following a difficult start to the season that has brought scrutiny of his performances. Raum, who is also the club captain, has faced criticism after several disappointing results, including a heavy defeat by Bayern Munich.
âWith all due respect, when criticism comes from the media, I donât take it seriously,â Raum said.
âThe only criticism I take to heart is that of my coach. I try to adapt to that. I try to change things. And, of course, there is my own criticism of myself, my personal standards for my performance. Everything else I donât read and I donât care about.â
The comments came at a sensitive time for the 28-year-old, whose contract is due to expire in the summer of 2027. According to Kicker, there is now little to suggest that Raum will extend his deal, while his recent comments about a possible departure have reportedly caused some displeasure within Leipzigâs leadership.
Raum has previously spoken openly about his ambition to play in the Premier League. With his current contract entering its final year, next summer could provide an opportunity to pursue that goal, although no future destination has been confirmed.
The defender joined Leipzig from Hoffenheim in 2022 and has become a senior figure at the club. However, his current form has prompted questions about whether he can meet the expectations attached to his role. Leipzigâs management have also been weighing up the terms of a potential new contract.
The club had previously indicated that they wanted to discuss an extension with Raum and his representatives. But an agreement has not been reached, and the latest reporting suggests the relationship could be approaching a turning point.
Raumâs position as captain makes his future particularly significant. Leipzig need consistency from an experienced defender, while the player must decide whether to commit to the club or pursue a new challenge while he still has the opportunity to secure a move.
For now, Raum has made clear that he intends to judge himself by his own standards and the feedback of his coach rather than external criticism. His contract situation, however, means questions about his longer-term future are unlikely to disappear soon.
