Moyes returned to Everton in January 2025 and is in the final year of his current agreement. The club’s American owners announced in October that they were considering options for their controlling interest, including a potential sale, and the manager believes that situation has affected the pace of negotiations.
Asked about the prospect of a new deal, Moyes said: “There has always been developments and talks have taken place, things are a bit quiet at the moment and I’m guessing it is more to do with the situation we are in just now.”
The Scot also backed comments from former Liverpool and Aston Villa executive Christian Purslow, who argued that extending Moyes’ contract would help provide continuity.
“What I would say, I would agree with Christian Purslow, about stability because stability at any football club is really important,” Moyes said.
“It is probably a thing at this club in recent years that has not been in place. I have actually felt over the past year and a half or so under The Friedkins there has been a real sense of stability.”
Moyes believes the atmosphere around Everton has improved during the current ownership’s tenure, with the move to Hill Dickinson Stadium representing a major step in the club’s development. He added that managers play an important role in maintaining stability, even as the modern game becomes increasingly impatient with coaches.
The manager’s immediate priority, however, is the team’s performance on the pitch. Everton suffered their first defeat of the season against Chelsea, losing 2-0 after Pedro Neto scored twice in the second half. They now face Arsenal as they look to respond.
Moyes also praised Harrison Armstrong, who has started all seven of Everton’s Premier League matches this season after the club abandoned a proposed sale to Nottingham Forest following supporter opposition.
“He’s a really intelligent boy for his age and he’s got a lot of football intelligence,” Moyes said. “He’s so adaptable for us and he easily takes in information for us.”
The manager believes Armstrong has progressed faster than expected, while urging him to add more goals and assists to his game.
Moyes also called for patience with younger players Tyrique George, Tyler Dibling and Hayden Hackney, pointing to the time established Everton players needed before becoming regulars.
For now, his own contract remains unresolved. Moyes has made clear that stability matters, but the ownership situation may need to become clearer before negotiations can move forward.
