The Spanish goalkeeper arrived in Florence in the summer of 2024 after a year as a free agent and has since rediscovered his best form, producing a series of decisive performances between the posts.
His influence now extends beyond his saves, with his experience also making him an important presence inside the Fiorentina dressing room.
De Gea’s start to the current season was less convincing, however. Under Fabio Grosso, his save percentage stood at around 56 per cent before improving following Paolo Vanoli’s arrival as head coach.
Fiorentina had already moved to secure his future in May 2025. Rather than activating an automatic one-year extension that would have increased his salary from €1.2 million to €2.4m, the club proposed a new three-year agreement worth €3m per season.
That deal means De Gea is currently contracted until 2028, but Fiorentina may not be prepared to wait until then before revisiting his terms.
According to the latest edition of Corriere dello Sport, the club are considering offering the former Manchester United goalkeeper another extension in the coming months, taking his contract beyond its current expiry date.
The proposal would underline De Gea’s growing importance to the team and reflect the transformation in his fortunes since arriving in Serie A.
After spending a year without a club, the 35-year-old has become a central figure at Fiorentina, both through his performances and his influence on a squad that increasingly relies on his experience.
The possibility of another renewal therefore represents more than a decision over the length of a contract. Fiorentina appear keen to retain a goalkeeper who has moved from an uncertain start in Italy to becoming one of the established leaders of the team.
