Matteo Darmian has joined Bologna on a contract until June 2027, returning to Serie A after establishing himself as one of Italian football’s most dependable defensive utility players.

The 36-year-old’s arrival was confirmed by Bologna on Thursday, with the club adding an experienced option capable of filling several roles across the defence.

Darmian can operate on either side of the back line and, when required, in a deeper position. Bologna highlighted his tactical discipline, positional awareness and ability to balance defensive responsibilities with attacking support.

His career began in AC Milan’s youth system, and he made his Serie A debut during the 2006-07 season. Spells with Padova and Palermo followed before he established himself at Torino, where four seasons helped make him one of the league’s respected full-backs.

Manchester United signed him in 2015. During his time in England, he won the FA Cup, League Cup and Europa League before returning to Italy with Parma in 2019.

He moved to Inter in October 2020 and became a versatile member of the squad, contributing to the club’s trophy-winning campaigns and appearing in two Champions League finals.

Darmian has also represented Italy more than 40 times. He made his international debut in 2014 and was part of the squad for that year’s World Cup in Brazil.

His honours include a Serie A title, two Coppa Italia trophies and a Supercoppa Italiana, alongside his three English trophies. Bologna will now benefit from his experience and flexibility as he begins the latest chapter of a long career.

The contract runs through to 30 June 2027, giving the club a proven option across multiple defensive positions for the remainder of the season.
