Transfer expert Fabrizio Romano confirmed on social media that negotiations over a new deal between Jones and Liverpool have been making no progress for months, and that as of late April there were no active discussions taking place.
The 25-year-old's contract expires in 2027, meaning this summer represents Liverpool's last realistic opportunity to sell him for a significant fee before his value diminishes.
Romano framed the situation clearly.
"Keep an eye on Curtis Jones. He was Inter's main midfield target in the January transfer window. They pushed hard but weren't able to convince Liverpool.
"The player had already shown openness to the Inter project. So there's mutual interest that still exists heading into the summer. As of now, I'm not aware of any ongoing negotiations for a contract renewal."
Liverpool blocked a loan-to-buy approach from Inter in January, with the club unwilling to let first-team players leave mid-season. Inter are expected to return with a permanent offer this summer. Liverpool are thought to value Jones at around โฌ35 million.
Jones himself would prefer to stay at Anfield if given guarantees over his role. He has featured 30 times in the Premier League this season, though a significant portion of those appearances have come from the bench or in the unfamiliar position of right back โ an area where Liverpool have faced injury problems. Manager Arne Slot has praised his adaptability.
"He's hardly played right-back in his career, but the way he does it is a big compliment."
Beyond Inter, Aston Villa are understood to be the most concrete English suitor, with Tottenham Hotspur also having shown interest during the winter window. Liverpool's summer recruitment plans are expected to include new midfield additions, which may further reduce Jones's chances of securing the starting role he is seeking.
The Liverpool academy graduate has made more than 200 appearances for the club, scoring 21 goals and providing 25 assists across all competitions.
