Elma Aveiro has cast doubt on Cristiano Ronaldo’s Portugal future after his dispute with coach Jorge Jesus led to a provisional suspension and disciplinary proceedings.

Ronaldo’s sister addressed the controversy at a book launch in Lisbon on Wednesday, suggesting the relationship between the Portugal captain and his national team coach could be difficult to repair.

Asked whether Ronaldo would return to international football, Aveiro said: “It’s more likely a no than a yes.”

She added: “I think both Cristiano and Jorge Jesus are hurt; it was a situation they experienced, not me, I’m speaking for my brother. I think it’s a situation that’s stalled, we’ll see what happens.”

The dispute followed Portugal’s 2-1 Nations League victory over Norway on September 27, when Ronaldo remained an unused substitute despite warming up during the match. The forward subsequently left the national team camp ahead of the next fixture, claiming Jesus had gone back on promises about his involvement.

Ronaldo later published a lengthy statement outlining his version of events and expressing his desire to continue representing Portugal. He also apologised to his teammates for leaving the camp.

The Portuguese Football Federation has since opened disciplinary proceedings and imposed a provisional suspension while the case is investigated. The final outcome, including any further punishment, has not yet been determined.

Aveiro was asked whether the disagreement could be resolved, but offered little reassurance.

“I don’t know, it’s very complicated. When we’re betrayed, it’s very difficult to go back to normal,” she said.

She also expressed sadness at the reaction to her brother’s treatment, arguing that his contribution to Portuguese football was being overlooked.

“My feeling is one of sadness because the Portuguese people unfortunately forget what has already been done and think that things should be done differently now. I’m speechless, it’s very difficult to see my brother go through this. He is one of the people who least deserve this.”

Her comments followed criticism from Ronaldo’s mother, Dolores Aveiro, who also questioned how the situation had been handled.

The latest intervention adds another layer to a dispute that has raised questions about the future of one of Portugal’s most decorated internationals. Ronaldo has previously rejected suggestions that he intended to retire from international football immediately after the 2026 World Cup.

For now, his return depends on the disciplinary process and whether he and Jesus can find a way forward. Despite Aveiro’s pessimism, Ronaldo himself has indicated that he remains willing to represent his country.
