Vinícius Júnior admitted he is below his best despite Real Madrid’s 4-3 comeback against Roma, criticising the timing of his four-match domestic suspension and asking fans for support.

The Brazilian learned of his ban before Wednesday’s Champions League match at AS Roma, where he was substituted during Madrid’s dramatic victory. Endrick came off the bench to help transform the contest, scoring the equaliser before Antonio Rüdiger completed the turnaround.

Vinícius questioned why the suspension was announced so close to kick-off, arguing that the timing left the player with little opportunity to prepare for the news.

“I think the suspension came at a bad time. They had the whole day to announce it, and I found out when I arrived at the stadium,” he said.

“The rules are new, and people from the league always come to explain new things to us, but this particular thing was never explained to us. I have never committed an act of violence against another player. I get kicked a lot, and the card is always harsh on me.”

The forward also acknowledged his frustration at being substituted, while recognising that the changes helped Madrid recover from a 3-1 deficit.

“I was angry after the substitution because I always want to be playing well and helping the team. The changes changed the team. Endrick changed the dynamic and was the best player. Carlos comes on for a few minutes, but he scores,” Vinícius said.

He admitted that his own performances have fallen short of his expectations, but remained confident he could rediscover his best form.

“I am angry with myself because I am not at my best. In the end, Vini always comes back, and I have no doubts that I will come back.”

The 26-year-old also addressed the criticism he has received from supporters. Vinícius acknowledged that the reaction from the stands can be difficult, but argued that the team performs better when the crowd is behind them.

“Obviously, the whistles do not help me, but people pay for their tickets. We play better when we have the fans with us. Jude plays better, Mbappé plays better, I play better,” he said.

“I think it is easier to whistle at me because I have been here longer and I am one of the captains.”

Vinícius ended with a reminder of the criticism he faced when he first arrived in Madrid and his determination to respond again.

“I am going to come back. When I arrived here as a young player, many people laughed at me, and in the end I have scored more than 100 goals for Real Madrid.”

His four-match suspension applies to domestic fixtures, leaving him available for Madrid’s European commitments. The comeback in Rome offered encouragement for the team, while Vinícius now faces the challenge of rebuilding his form and responding to criticism as Madrid continue their campaign.
