Former SSC Napoli fitness coach Corrado Saccone believes his old club are enduring a “failed season” — and has raised doubts over the future of Antonio Conte.

Speaking to Football Presse, Saccone pointed to injuries and workload management as key reasons behind Napoli’s struggles.

“Napoli this year have had too many injuries,” he said. “I don’t think it’s only physical preparation — but maybe some workloads were not properly absorbed by the players.

“When you have many injuries, the whole staff must review everything — the metres run, the intensity, the training time — and propose something new.”

Saccone believes Napoli’s problems are even more frustrating given the strength of their squad.

“They are throwing away a league with a very competitive team. This Napoli is stronger than last year’s. They could have reached the Champions League — instead they went out of Europe, out of the Coppa Italia, and are struggling in the league.

“It’s a failed season. Not positive.”

He also questioned whether Conte is maximising the group at his disposal.

“He is not doing a bad job, but when you don’t reach your objectives, it’s always a problem.

“With that squad, maybe Antonio Conte has not done the maximum he could. He should have improved players more and reached important targets.”

Looking ahead, Saccone hinted that a change in direction may be needed.

“Next year, maybe new motivation is needed. Perhaps it’s better if Conte finds another team and Napoli choose a coach with a different philosophy.

“Conte is known to demand a lot from players. When players give too much one year, the next year they are not always competitive.”

Saccone also stressed the importance of individualised fitness work in the modern game, referencing players like Kevin De Bruyne.

“You cannot manage every player the same. A player like Kevin De Bruyne must be treated differently to a young player.

“When we had Gonzalo Higuaín, we gave him more rest because he had to play many matches.

“At the end of the season, the staff must analyse everything. Preparation depends on the group you have — and if you change players, you must change the training completely.”
