Inter’s second Champions League defeat left Cristian Chivu searching for answers after Club Brugge won 4-3 at San Siro, with Nicolò Tresoldi scoring a hat-trick.

Tresoldi put Brugge ahead from the penalty spot before Lautaro Martínez equalised shortly before half-time. The forward struck twice more after the break, Martínez scored again, and Romeo Vermant restored Brugge’s two-goal lead before Ange-Yoan Bonny’s stoppage-time goal.

Speaking after the match, Chivu told Tuttomercatoweb that Inter’s defensive problems stemmed from pressing and positioning.

“The problem was the wrong pressing and the distances becoming too long. When we tried to pick up our references, we arrived late. We played a good first half; sometimes you have to suffer against a Champions League team.

"In the second half we had two clear chances, but we lost our clarity, became frantic, and then their pace caused us problems. After 2-1, we did not get back into the game.”

He said European football quickly punishes lapses and demands better balance.

“There is no explanation. We know what we have done. It does not mean we are worse than yesterday or last year. We have to find the right balance here too, where the level is very high. We still have six matches in this league phase. We will do our best and try to change the direction.”

“We want to act rather than react. Today we lacked clarity and were too frantic. In the Champions League, you pay for that. The details make the difference, and we have to deal with them better.”

Brugge coach Ivan Leko said his team had shown courage against a side he admires.

“We tried to be dominant, but we were playing against a very strong opponent. Inter played a good game and were very aggressive. We were brave. We were not as dominant as we wanted to be, partly because of how they played. I love this Inter; I have been watching them for six years.”

“This victory gives us peace and confidence. We are not yet at last year’s level; I was in love with last year’s Brugge. We need time to grow. Today we had our moments and put in a good performance. There are many things to improve, but when I see the desire to win and play, I know that in the long run things will go well.”

The defeat leaves Inter Milan without a point after two league-phase matches, while Brugge leave Milan with a victory built on attacking courage and ruthless finishing.
