Chicago Fire coach confirms pursuit of Lewandowski after Barcelona farewell

Robert Lewandowski has said his goodbyes to Barcelona and the clubs chasing his signature are already making themselves known.

The Poland international, 37, announced his departure from the Catalan club two weeks ago after four seasons that brought three LaLiga titles and 119 goals in 191 appearances. He was given a standing ovation at the Spotify Camp Nou and again at Mestalla in Valencia, where he featured in his final match as a Barcelona player.

The first club to speak openly about signing him has been Chicago Fire of Major League Soccer.

Head coach Gregg Berhalter confirmed the club's interest and the existence of ongoing negotiations in comments that were remarkably candid for a manager discussing a player still technically attached to another club.

"I can speak frankly because he is no longer a Barcelona player, or he will not be next week," Berhalter told Polish outlet Przegląd Sportowy Onet. "He is someone we want to sign."

Berhalter confirmed that discussions had taken place with both Lewandowski and his representatives directly.

"As for our communication, we have had a lot — both with him and with his entourage."

The Chicago coach framed the potential signing as significant beyond its sporting dimension, pointing to the city's substantial Polish community and the wider cultural impact of landing one of the game's most recognisable figures.

"The Polish community, and not only that, but the whole of the Chicago community, supports this transfer," he said. "We believe it is a fantastic signing for the club, the city and the league."

The interest is real. Whether it leads to a deal is less certain. Lewandowski has attracted interest from clubs in Europe — Italian sources have linked Juventus and AC Milan to his representatives — as well as substantial offers from the Saudi Pro League.

Berhalter acknowledged the competition directly.

"First of all, I don't think there are no other offers. I find it hard to believe. I'm sure a player of his calibre should have proposals."

At 37, Lewandowski continues to score with consistency. He contributed 18 goals in 44 appearances for Barcelona this season despite a campaign his club considered below his usual standards.

His next destination is his to choose. The queue is already forming.
