Alejandro Garnacho is expected to remain at Aston Villa beyond the end of his loan spell, with the club increasingly confident that Unai Emery can help the winger recover his form and confidence.

The 22-year-old scored in both of Villa’s recent friendlies against Southampton and Sevilla during the international break, offering encouragement after a difficult start following his summer move from Chelsea.

Villa sources believe Garnacho is beginning to make progress, although his early struggles have been understandable given the circumstances surrounding his arrival, reports the Athletic.

The Argentina international joined Villa after a frustrating period at Chelsea, where he had not reported for pre-season training while seeking a move away. He arrived in the Midlands short of fitness and confidence, having endured successive setbacks following his departure from Manchester United.

His personal life had also become difficult, with the mother of his son leaving England. Those challenges followed a period in which his career had stalled and his public behaviour had attracted scrutiny.

Emery nevertheless pushed for the signing, having previously wanted to bring Garnacho to Villa when he was still at Manchester United. The manager believes the winger has the potential to become an important player, provided he adapts to the demands of his methods.

Garnacho has made only three Premier League substitute appearances so far, totalling 31 minutes. He has found himself behind John McGinn and other wide options, including Ibrahim Mbaye, while a concussion during pre-season also disrupted his preparation.

The limited involvement has inevitably raised questions about whether Villa might look to end the arrangement in January. However, the club has no recall clause in the loan agreement and remains hopeful that the move will work.

The initial loan includes a conditional obligation to buy based on appearances, with the overall package potentially reaching £42.5 million. The exact threshold has not been disclosed, but sources at both clubs believe it is achievable.

Two Villa sources said they would be surprised if Garnacho did not become their player permanently beyond this season. Staff have reportedly been briefed that the loan was arranged with a strong expectation of a permanent transfer.

Emery is prepared to be patient because Garnacho was not recruited as an automatic starter. The manager has a track record of demanding high standards from new arrivals, but he also sees the winger as a longer-term project.

Garnacho’s Instagram caption, “Ready now”, after his recent friendly goals may prove optimistic, but the performances offered a positive sign.

The coming weeks will show whether he can translate that progress into competitive minutes. Villa still expect him to stay, and the priority is giving him the opportunity to rebuild his confidence and demonstrate the talent that persuaded Emery to pursue him.
