The conversation was designed to gauge Iraola's availability and understand his thinking for the summer rather than to open substantive contract negotiations.
Chelsea are not expected to make a formal appointment until after the season concludes.
Iraola, 43, confirmed earlier this month that he would leave Bournemouth when his contract expires in June. Bournemouth have already appointed Marco Rose as his successor.
The Spaniard is understood to prefer Chelsea over Crystal Palace, who are also interested, but has been careful to avoid public engagement on the subject.
When asked directly about the Chelsea links last week, Iraola was pointed.
"For me, now, it's about Bournemouth. Four games. We have an incredible position, an incredible fight ahead. As a sign of respect for Bournemouth, I cannot talk right now about my future."
Chelsea have now sacked two managers โ Enzo Maresca and Rosenior โ who both arrived without Premier League experience. Iraola brings over 100 Premier League games as a head coach on the south coast, which satisfies a key shift in the club's thinking.
Ben Jacobs confirmed multiple candidates are being assessed, with Marco Silva another genuine option.
