Chelsea maintain Koundé interest as Barcelona role shrinks

Jules Koundé’s reduced role for Barcelona has attracted Chelsea’s attention, with the French defender being monitored ahead of the January transfer window.

Koundé has made a limited start to the season for both Barcelona and France, but his quality and versatility continue to make him an attractive option for Chelsea.

The 27-year-old has appeared in five of Barcelona’s eight matches, starting only two. He has generally played at right-back, while Eric García has been preferred there by Hansi Flick and other defenders have been used in central defence.

Koundé’s international involvement has also been reduced. He started France’s Nations League meeting with Turkey on 25 September and played the full 90 minutes, but remained on the bench for the subsequent matches against Belgium and Italy.

His contract with Barcelona runs until 2030, but that has not stopped Chelsea from keeping track of his situation. The London club has been interested in Koundé for several years and sees his ability to operate both at right-back and centre-back as a major attraction.

Chelsea are considering a move for the defender in January as Xabi Alonso looks to strengthen his options. Barcelona’s willingness to consider sales also makes the situation worth monitoring, particularly with the club needing to raise funds to make additions of its own.

Koundé, however, is not currently pushing to leave Barcelona. The defender is understood to be happy at the club, while neither he nor Barcelona has received confirmation of Chelsea’s reported intentions.

That leaves the immediate situation unchanged. Koundé’s reduced playing time has created an opening for speculation, but a January transfer would still depend on Barcelona deciding to act, Chelsea making a concrete approach and the player being willing to consider it.

The uncertainty is therefore about opportunity rather than Koundé’s established ability. His reduced role has simply made a long-standing Chelsea interest more relevant ahead of January.
