The former Chelsea and Arsenal defender was part of Lee Carsley's coaching team, having joined the set-up in 2021 and played a role in the current qualifying campaign as well as the two title-winning tournaments. Carsley paid tribute to his departing assistant, praising the impact he had on the group.
"I want to pay tribute to Ashley who played a major part in our two Euro wins and also had a key role in the current campaign with his tactical and technical knowledge," Carsley said.
"As well as being an important part of our coaching team, he also had a positive, inspirational impact on his players given his own elite experience.
"I am certain he will have even more success in his coaching career whatever the future holds."
Cole, 45, retired from playing in 2019 before moving into coaching, initially completing his badges at Derby County under Frank Lampard. He went on to work within Chelsea's academy before further spells assisting managers at Everton and Birmingham City, the latter under Wayne Rooney, and later served alongside Carsley during his brief spell as interim head coach of the senior England side in 2024.
Cole took his first senior managerial role in March, taking charge of Serie B club Cesena after previously admitting he had felt "discouraged" from progressing into management within the English football pyramid. He left the Italian club in June following discussions with its sporting director over a "change in the club's strategy," bringing an end to a short spell in the dugout.
As a player, Cole won 107 England caps and secured a host of major honours with Arsenal and Chelsea, including three Premier League titles, the Champions League, the Europa League, seven FA Cups and one League Cup, establishing himself as one of the finest left-backs of his generation before transitioning into coaching following his retirement.
Cole's exit from the England set-up leaves Carsley needing to reshape his backroom staff heading into the current qualifying campaign, with the FA yet to confirm a replacement. Reports suggest Cole is now weighing up his next move, with a return to club management thought to be among the options under consideration.
