Chelsea have arranged specialist treatment for Joao Pedro during the international break as the striker works to recover from a knee injury.

The Brazil international withdrew from his national-team squad earlier this month after suffering the problem, which also ruled him out of Chelsea’s 3-0 defeat by Brentford in their final match before the international window.

Reports in Brazil suggested at the time that Joao Pedro could be sidelined for up to four weeks.

The 25-year-old has since been seeing a specialist in London in an attempt to speed up his recovery, with Chelsea’s medical staff also monitoring his progress closely.

Players not involved with their national teams were given time off during the international break, allowing Joao Pedro to receive treatment while continuing his rehabilitation under the club’s supervision.

Joao Pedro first felt discomfort in the days after Chelsea’s 2-2 draw with Hull City on September 12. There had initially been hope that he could recover in time to face Brentford six days later, but he was eventually ruled out.

There is still no confirmed return date for the striker, although the expectation at Chelsea is that the injury is not a long-term problem.

No decision has yet been made over whether Joao Pedro will be available for the Premier League meeting with Bournemouth on October 10.

The Brazilian had established a strong attacking relationship with Cole Palmer and Morgan Rogers during the opening weeks of the season, with the trio expected to play an important role in Xabi Alonso’s first campaign as Chelsea head coach.

Chelsea have also had Reece James unavailable during the international break, while Moises Caicedo has been away from the club with Ecuador.

Palmer was initially selected by England but withdrew last Monday. England manager Thomas Tuchel said the 24-year-old was suffering from “pain and discomfort” and acknowledged that Palmer misses too many international camps, while insisting that he has a genuine injury rather than simply being managed because of his workload.

For Chelsea, the immediate priority is to give Joao Pedro the time and treatment required to return without aggravating the knee problem.
