The west London club are considering a move for John Stones after his release by Manchester City at the end of his contract. The 32-year-old centre-back is currently enjoying some downtime following England's World Cup campaign, in which he started their semi-final exit to Argentina.
Chelsea's interest comes despite club sources having tried to play down rumours of a move for Stones only a month ago, though he is understood to now be a genuine candidate.
Arsenal have also been credited with an interest, reportedly viewing the defender as a possible short-term option should William Saliba's injury prove serious.
Elsewhere in defence and midfield, Chelsea have seen a £64million bid for Bournemouth's Alex Scott rejected. The Cherries have insisted their midfielder remains not for sale, even after Scott turned down a new contract amid interest from Chelsea, Manchester United and Arsenal.
Chelsea are also continuing talks over Crystal Palace's Maxence Lacroix, with discussions said to have taken place at ownership level between Behdad Eghbali and Steve Parish in New York. Palace want around £60million for the 26-year-old, who represented France at the World Cup, while Como's Jacobo Ramon, 21, remains another option on Chelsea's shortlist.
While the club chase new arrivals, they have also acted to protect their long-term future by tying down academy attacker Sol Gordon to a new contract until at least 2029. Gordon, who joined Chelsea's development centre at Under-8 level, has progressed through the ranks to become a regular for the Under-18s and has also featured for the Under-21s.
Having scored 19 goals and provided seven assists across the Under-16 and Under-17 age groups during the 2023/24 campaign, Gordon signed his first professional contract after turning 17 and went on to finish as the Under-18s' leading scorer with 15 goals last season, later netting in a 5-1 win over Manchester City in the Under-18 Premier League National Final.
