Chavarria did not make his La Liga debut until he was 24, a late breakthrough by the standards of most players who reach clubs the size of Chelsea, but the 28-year-old has now completed the biggest move of his career, signing a five-year deal from Rayo Vallecano worth around £16.3 million plus a further £1.7 million in add-ons.
"This is a dream for me as Chelsea are one of the biggest clubs in the world. It is a big opportunity but I am prepared and will work hard to help the team achieve success," Chavarria said.
"In the morning, in the afternoon, in the evening, I dreamed of moments like this. When I was a child, it was always my goal to arrive at a club like this.
"I've played at every level in Spain, and to be able to move up, it's always been about hard work because today is my dream coming true. I can say it was all worth it."
The left-back spent four years at Rayo Vallecano, helping the club reach the 2026 UEFA Conference League final, where they lost narrowly 1-0 to Crystal Palace. He believes the resilience built through that unconventional route to the top will serve him well under Chelsea manager Xabi Alonso, another player who began his own senior career outside Spain's top flight.
"I think that the Premier League is the best in the world. I think there is more intensity, more duels and more quality than anywhere. And I think that it's the perfect league for me," Chavarria said.
"I'm a player that loves this intensity, one-to-one battles - I love it. Xabi was a top player, and now, for me, he's one of the best managers in the world. I spoke to him, and he explained his ideas and how I can fit into that. He wants my intensity, those one-on-ones, box-to-box attacking and defending runs - and this is how I play."
Chavarria named Marc Cucurella, Cesar Azpilicueta and Marcos Alonso as full-backs he had looked up to before his move, and pointed to the current squad's pedigree as part of what drew him to west London.
"Chelsea are winners, and they have winners. They are world champions with players like Cole Palmer, Morgan Rogers, Joao Pedro, Estevao, and I think they are some of the best players in the world," he said.
"And Chelsea have a lot of history too with players like Didier Drogba, Eden Hazard - some of the best players in the world have played here. They have won the Champions League and the Club World Cup - it's really exciting."
Elsewhere at Stamford Bridge, defender Ishe Samuels-Smith has left on a season-long loan to Notts County, seeking regular senior football in League One after a difficult campaign on loan at Swansea City.
The 20-year-old, who joined Chelsea from Everton in 2023, has been a regular for the club's Under-21 side and was named among the substitutes for the senior team on several occasions during his first two years at the club. His previous loan spell yielded limited game time in the Championship, prompting Chelsea to sanction a drop down a division in search of more consistent minutes as he continues his development away from Stamford Bridge.
