Manchester United's confirmation of Michael Carrick as permanent manager is being delayed by ongoing contract talks with his backroom staff, with a two-year deal for Carrick already agreed.

Carrick's agent, Jo Tongue, attended training at Carrington on Thursday and was present for Sunday's 3-2 win over Nottingham Forest. Manchester United had wanted to make an announcement over the weekend but are now expected to confirm the appointment during the week.

The deal in place for Carrick covers two years with an option for a further year. The hold-up centres on resolving the futures of the staff he brought in when he was appointed interim manager in January: former England assistant Steve Holland, former Middlesbrough defender Jonathan Woodgate, Jonny Evans โ€” who returned to the club as part of Carrick's setup โ€” and Travis Binnion, who was promoted from under-21 coach to the senior squad.

Goalkeeping coach Craig Mawson, who has been at United for close to seven years, is also part of the discussions and is in line for an improved contract to reflect his elevated role.

Carrick has been vocal about the importance of Holland to the group, describing him as a key figure both tactically and in terms of managing the dressing room's emotional temperature.

"He's a very wise man, Steve, and says things that really are important at the right time. His general calmness and composure are there for everyone โ€” for me, for my staff, for the players as well. He brings something a little bit different."

Holland had originally signed up only until the end of the season. United are now moving to keep him beyond that, with a deal through to 2028 understood to be the target. All members of the coaching group are expected to remain, with the delay reflecting the mechanics of finalising multiple contracts simultaneously rather than any uncertainty over the appointments themselves.
