Justin Kluivert opened the scoring from the penalty spot in the eighth minute after Koni De Winter handled Evanilson’s header. Milan’s night deteriorated further when goalkeeper Mike Maignan was sent off for pushing Tyler Adams in the face during a corner.
Marcus Tavernier converted the resulting penalty in the 32nd minute, leaving Milan with a two-goal deficit and a numerical disadvantage. Amine Adli then completed the victory with a superb free-kick from distance six minutes from time.
The result gave Bournemouth nine points from their opening three Europa League matches, following earlier victories over Real Sociedad and Sturm Graz.
Rose was delighted with the way his side approached the occasion, particularly their intensity and willingness to impose themselves on a distinguished opponent.
“The way we got into the game, the effort, the attitude, the way we won balls and put pressure on Milan was great. We created chances, scored an early goal and kept the pressure high. This was Bournemouth, and this is what we wanted to show.”
The Bournemouth head coach also praised the club and supporters after a night that underlined the progress made by the south-coast side.
“I feel really good. I'm proud of the club, happy for the fans and proud of the lads. It was a great evening, a great result and a brilliant performance in every aspect. We were really sharp in everything, played our game and, it's a deserved win.”
Rain added to the atmosphere, but Rose had no complaints about the conditions.
“I liked the weather! It was our weather today, and maybe it helped us in a couple of situations - English weather, English club. Everything was fine.”
For Ruben Amorim, the dismissal and two-goal deficit left Milan facing an uphill battle before the interval. The Portuguese coach felt the contest had effectively been decided early, despite his team’s efforts to remain organised with ten men.
“It was not a great performance, because the game was over after 20 minutes. We defended quite well with ten men and tried to push the game forward and take a risk near the end, but then the free-kick completely killed the game.”
Amorim urged his players to recover quickly and avoid repeating the mistakes that left them so exposed.
“Now we must recover and think about the next one. We have to take lessons from this, and we cannot put ourselves in that position [after the red card] again. Now we must focus on the league and then try to win the next Europa match [vs Ferencváros] like we do in every game.”
For Bournemouth, the immediate reward is a perfect European record and renewed belief that they can compete with established continental names.
