Bernardo: I wanted to leave Man City in best possible way

Bernardo Silva will leave Manchester City at the end of the season, bringing to a close a nine-year association with the club that produced six Premier League titles and one Champions League, but his next destination remains unresolved.

Manchester City confirmed in April that the 31-year-old Portuguese midfielder would not be extending his contract beyond its expiry date at the end of June. The decision, Silva later revealed, had effectively been made two years ago when he signed what turned out to be his final deal at the Etihad Stadium.

"The decision took time. I made it about two years ago when I signed my last contract in 2023," he told the Portuguese programme Soltinhos pelo Mundo. "I had understood for quite some time that my cycle in Manchester was coming to an end and wanted to close this chapter in the best possible way."

Barcelona have been the most persistently linked destination across the past three summers, with Silva reported to be the club's preference and agent Jorge Mendes having offered him to the Catalan club. The obstacles, however, are significant. Barcelona already have seven midfielders registered, and coach Hansi Flick's priorities lie elsewhere in the squad this summer. The club's financial constraints also limit their ability to match the salary Silva could command elsewhere.

Atletico Madrid have emerged as a serious alternative. Reports in Spain indicate that Diego Simeone's side view Silva as an ideal addition, and discussions with his representatives have been progressing.

Silva himself has declined to confirm his next club. Speaking to Canal 11, he said: "I don't know where I will play. I really don't. I have an idea of what I want to do. I am talking with my agent, but I want to make the decision based on the options I have after the season ends."

He added: "I want to decide between the end of the season and the start of international camp โ€” to not have too many things to think about. Because the World Cup is too important to be thinking about anything else."

Silva joined City from Monaco in the summer of 2017 for around ยฃ43 million. He departs as one of the most decorated players in the club's history, widely regarded alongside David Silva as the finest midfielder to represent them in the Premier League era.

He deserved a proper send-off. He will get his chance at the World Cup.
