Díaz, 29, has not yet matched his strong debut season, and it is no surprise that the winger looks a little overplayed, given that he played 66 matches last season for Bayern (51) and Colombia (15).
Speaking after the 7-0 win over Union Berlin, Eberl explained the decision to let him miss the international games.
“After the World Cup in South America, these are not really compelling games and it will do the players good. He will, I think, first take a bit of a holiday and then he will gradually come back in.”
The question is whether Bayern Munich would benefit from a genuine Díaz replacement, since the squad has lost Arijon Ibrahimović to FC Augsburg. Head coach Vincent Kompany has several players who can play on the left wing but are actually at home elsewhere.
Asked whether Bayern would therefore be active in the winter transfer market, Eberl gave a pointed answer.
“From where did Isi (Saibari, editor’s note) score a goal today? From which position did he score?”
That suggests Bayern are not actively looking for a Díaz backup for now.
There is also news on a former Bayern star. Javi Martínez has taken up a role at the club, which has confirmed that the 38-year-old Spaniard is a brand ambassador with immediate effect. He has been without a club since the summer after leaving Qatar’s Al-Bidda SC.
Martínez was under contract with Bayern between 2012 and 2021, and the defensive midfielder won the Champions League twice and the German championship nine times with the club.
