According to Sport Bild, the club's hierarchy intend to sit down with the South Korean defender to discuss extending his deal beyond its current 2028 expiry.
The change in stance reflects Kim's re-establishment as a key figure in Vincent Kompany's side after a difficult 2025-26 season in which he was mostly used as a backup following the arrival of Jonathan Tah.
Kim has started four of Bayern's six competitive matches this term and has clearly benefited from the manager's trust. The 29-year-old, who joined from Napoli for €50 million in July 2023, was previously linked with a move away, with Fenerbahçe among the clubs to express interest.
"Minjae Kim is no longer a sale candidate," Sky Germany journalist Florian Plettenberg reported in July. "The only exception would be an extraordinary offer that Kim himself wants to accept.
"As things stand, Bayern want to keep him and are planning with him."
That assessment has now been reinforced by the decision to pursue an extension. Kim's current contract, which makes him one of the highest-paid defenders in the Bundesliga at a reported €12 million per year, still has two years to run. Any new deal would likely see him remain at the Allianz Arena into his early thirties.
The defender has made 79 Bundesliga appearances for Bayern since his arrival, winning back-to-back league titles in 2024-25 and 2025-26. He also played a key role in South Korea's World Cup campaign, featuring in all three of the team's group stage matches.
Kim's resurgence has been particularly notable given the criticism he faced during the 2024-25 season, when he was playing through an Achilles injury that eventually required surgery. His ability to recover both physically and mentally has impressed Kompany and the coaching staff.
Bayern's defensive options have been strengthened by the presence of Tah and Dayot Upamecano, but Kim's experience and aerial dominance remain valuable assets. The club's willingness to extend his contract signals their belief that he can continue to contribute at the highest level for several more seasons.
