"He's training with us, but he will not play any significant role going forward. He's been told this by us," Freund said.
Asked to elaborate on the club's plans for the Frenchman, he added: "He's a good player. He'll continue training and playing with us, but the plan is for him to continue his career elsewhere."
Boey joined Bayern from Galatasaray for a fee of around €30 million in January 2024, but never established himself as a regular starter in Munich. He was loaned back to Galatasaray in February this year, where he impressed during the second half of last season, and the Turkish club held an option to sign him permanently for around €15 million.
That option has not been exercised, however, leaving Boey's future unresolved as he reports for pre-season training at Bayern with no clear role in Vincent Kompany's plans.
Freund was complimentary about the full-back's prospects of finding a new club, despite ruling him out of Bayern's plans.
"He's a player in demand. He's put in some good performances in Turkey. He could fit into many teams," the sporting director said.
Boey's contract at the Allianz Arena runs until the summer of 2028, giving Bayern some leverage in negotiations over any sale, with reports in Germany suggesting he has also attracted interest from clubs in the Premier League as he looks to find regular first-team football away from Bavaria.
Boey's spell in Munich never recovered from a difficult start, with Vincent Kompany's arrival initially expected to be a turning point given the Belgian's past interest in signing him while at Burnley. That did not materialise, and Boey struggled for game time before his loan return to Turkey revived his form and market value. Bayern are understood to be holding firm on an asking price of around €15 million, matching the figure Galatasaray had been given as a buy-option fee, as they look to recoup a fair share of their original outlay on a player who never fulfilled his early promise in Germany.
