Joan Laporta gave an unexpected update on the future of Ghanaian winger Abdul Aziz Issah while in New York for the World Cup final, as Barcelona continue working to avoid a repeat of the Dro Fernandez saga among their academy prospects.

Approached by a Ghanaian journalist while in the United States, the Barcelona president was asked about Issah, whose two-year loan spell at Barca Atletic from Dreams FC expired at the end of June.

"I know Aziz. We brought him in for our reserve team," Laporta said. "And now he'll be part of the first-team set-up. A great lad."

The 20-year-old winger's long-term role remains unclear, though his return to the club appears to have been confirmed.

The comments come as Barcelona work to overhaul how they structure contracts for their most promising young players, following the departure of midfielder Pedro "Dro" Fernandez to PSG in January. Fernandez left by triggering a release clause worth just a few million euros after a rapid rise through the Juvenil B side into Hansi Flick's first team, a move that caused considerable frustration inside the club.

In response, Barcelona have significantly raised the performance-linked release clauses in contracts handed to academy players, building on an approach already used with Marc Guiu, whose own deal included clauses that increased with call-ups to Barca Atletic or the first team.

Forward Ebrima Tunkara is among those to have signed a contract with a relatively high clause under the new policy.

That shift in strategy has left two of the Juvenil A's leading talents, midfielders Pedro Rodriguez and Pedro Villar, without a place in this pre-season's first-team squad while renewal talks continue. Both 18-year-olds are under contract until 2027, with the holdup centred on their development pathway rather than financial terms, according to Mundo Deportivo.

Villar is regarded as a tactically astute midfielder capable of playing as an interior or a pivot, and has also become a reliable goalscorer this season, while Rodriguez has a similar profile and stands out for his vision of the game. Both are seen as having the potential to reach the first team in time.

Goalkeeper Iker Rodriguez, another academy player whose contract runs until 2027, is in a different position, with only a signature needed to formalise his renewal. He has been included among the players Flick will take to the club's training stage in England, unlike the two Pedros, whose absence reflects unfinished negotiations rather than any deeper problem.

Both are expected to be key figures for Barca Atletic once their new campaign begins next week.
