The Argentina international’s future has come under fresh scrutiny following his public criticism of Manchester United’s hierarchy after the Champions League defeat to Atlético Madrid.

According to Sky Sport, Barcelona are keeping track of Martínez’s situation and could consider a move for the defender on a free transfer in 2027. No agreement or departure has been confirmed, and United have the option to extend his contract by a further year.

Martínez joined United in 2022 and became a World Cup winner with Argentina later that year. His future is now a subject of speculation after comments made in the aftermath of United’s 2-0 defeat in Madrid prompted questions about his relationship with the club’s leadership.

The defender reportedly discussed his position with his representatives, who have since sounded out clubs that might be interested. The report also says Martínez held talks with head coach Michael Carrick and club officials before issuing an apology over the incident.

The episode has placed his relationship with the club under the spotlight at a time when United are considering changes to their defence. Sky Sports has separately reported that the club hold an option to prolong Martínez’s stay, while his existing deal is due to expire next summer.

Barcelona are said to have admired the defender’s profile for several seasons. His left-footed distribution and ability to defend aggressively could appeal to the Spanish club, but interest does not necessarily mean a transfer will follow.

There are also important contractual complications. United can exercise their extension option, potentially preventing Martínez from becoming a free agent in 2027. The club’s decision on that clause will be central to any prospective move.

The defender’s recent treatment on the pitch has added another layer to the discussion. After completing 90 minutes in five consecutive matches, Martínez was substituted at half-time in his latest appearance, although that decision alone does not establish that his position has changed permanently.

For Barcelona, monitoring the situation could allow them to assess whether an opportunity emerges without a transfer fee. For United, the immediate questions concern both the defender’s future and the club’s response to his public criticism.

At this stage, a move to Barcelona remains a reported possibility rather than an agreed transfer. Martínez’s contract option gives United some control over the situation, while the defender’s own intentions and the club’s plans for their back line remain unresolved.
