Barcelona have identified Chelsea striker João Pedro as their primary alternative to Atlético Madrid's Julián Álvarez, with the Brazilian willing to make the move to Camp Nou despite Chelsea's firm intention to keep him.

Sport confirmed Pedro as the leading backup target in Barcelona's striker search this summer, as sporting director Deco accelerates planning for the eventual departure of Robert Lewandowski, whose contract expires at the end of June. Álvarez remains the priority but Atletico Madrid have repeatedly demanded over €120million, a figure that has led Barcelona to develop genuine alternatives.

Pedro, 24, has been exceptional in his debut season at Stamford Bridge following his £60million move from Brighton last summer, contributing 23 goals and nine assists across 50 appearances in all competitions. Barcelona believe his profile — versatile, clinical and at the peak of his physical development — fits precisely what Hansi Flick's system requires. Former Barcelona striker Bojan Krkić made the case publicly, telling Cadena SER he would back Pedro over Álvarez.

"João Pedro is ideal for the Barça system. I would bet on João Pedro rather than Julián — I like him more. He finishes, he plays well, he is very complete. He is more of a goal scorer and a better player."

Chelsea's position is categorical. Fabrizio Romano has confirmed the club have no intention of selling Pedro, who signed a contract running to 2033. However, Chelsea's financial vulnerability may yet complicate that stance — the club posted losses close to £200million last season and face the prospect of missing European football entirely this summer.

Barcelona are exploring the possibility of a joint deal that would include left-back Marc Cucurella, potentially worth less than €100million combined. A fee of between €80million and €100million for Pedro alone has been cited. Pedro has spoken privately with Raphinha about life in Catalonia but has made no formal request to leave.

Former Chelsea winger Shaun Wright-Phillips urged Pedro to push for the move.

"If I were Joao Pedro, I would want to play in the Champions League. I can't see Chelsea qualifying for any European competition. He deserves to be playing at that level."
