Barcelona encouraged by Diego Kochen’s progress during Lyngby loan

Diego Kochen is making a strong impression in Denmark after joining Lyngby on loan from Barcelona, with the goalkeeper’s performances giving the Catalan club reason to monitor his development closely.

The 20-year-old American joined Lyngby for the season after finding his opportunities at Barcelona increasingly limited. With Joan García arriving and Wojciech Szczesny also competing for a place, Kochen needed a route to regular senior football.

Barcelona agreed a season-long loan with an option for Lyngby to buy the goalkeeper for €1.5 million. The Catalan club also retained a percentage of any future sale, giving the deal a potential financial benefit beyond the initial transfer.

Kochen had spent seven seasons developing at Barcelona after joining from Fundació Marcet in 2019. He progressed through the academy, became part of the Barça Atlètic setup and was regularly included in first-team squads.

The move to Denmark has given him something that was increasingly difficult to obtain in Barcelona: consistent competitive minutes. His performances have already attracted attention, including a seven-save display against Odense that earned him recognition in the Danish Superliga’s team of the week.

The goalkeeper’s form is particularly encouraging for Barcelona because the loan allows them to assess his progress in a demanding senior environment rather than relying solely on his academy development.

Kochen is also an international with the United States, adding another element to his development as he seeks to establish himself at professional level.

For now, Barcelona retain control over his longer-term situation. Lyngby have the option to make the move permanent, while the Spanish club have protected their interests with the future-sale provision.

Kochen’s immediate objective, however, remains straightforward: continue playing, build experience and demonstrate that he can handle regular senior football.

The early evidence from Denmark suggests he is making the most of the opportunity.
