Standing at 1.93 metres, Nijstad has drawn attention for his composure in possession and passing range — qualities that prompted Barcelona to send a delegation to the Netherlands for face-to-face talks with his camp earlier this year.
Despite retaining their conviction in the player, the Catalan club regard €8 million as too high for an 18-year-old at this stage of his development. They are maintaining contact but waiting to see how the remainder of the season unfolds before deciding whether to push again.
Nijstad represents the kind of low-cost, high-potential profile Barcelona's sporting director Deco has been targeting, with the club having already signed fellow young Dutch defender Juwensley Onstein from Genk in January.
Twente are aware of the leverage their contract situation provides — Nijstad is tied to the club until 2027 — and are pushing for a renewal. Former Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag, now technical director at the Enschede club, is said to be keen to convince him to stay.
The player himself has remained measured. "It's either extend or leave, I think," Nijstad said recently. "I focus on the football."
Barcelona are not alone in their admiration. Several Bundesliga and Premier League clubs have been linked with the Netherlands under-19 international, with Chelsea reported to have presented him with a buy-and-loan plan that would see him return to Twente for another season. Bayern Munich and Manchester City have also been mentioned.
With his contract ticking down and a summer decision approaching, Nijstad holds significant leverage. Barcelona are watching. So is half of Europe.
