Barcelona are reportedly preparing to open formal negotiations with Tottenham Hotspur over a summer move for defender Cristian Romero as uncertainty builds around the north London club’s season finale.

Tottenham head into their final Premier League match knowing their campaign still hangs in the balance, with safety in the league secured only by avoiding defeat against Everton. Despite the broader instability, Romero has remained one of Spurs’ most influential performers, contributing six goals and three assists in 32 appearances across all competitions.

The Argentina international, 28, has been a long-term target for Barcelona, with Sport reporting that contact has already taken place with his representatives. The Spanish champions are now said to be preparing an official approach to Tottenham as they explore defensive reinforcements ahead of next season.

However, Barcelona are not expected to meet the reported €60 million valuation, which could complicate negotiations between the two clubs. Romero remains under contract at Tottenham until 2029, giving Spurs strong leverage in any potential talks.

The World Cup-winning defender has also made 49 appearances for Argentina, scoring three goals at international level. Barcelona’s interest comes as they continue planning for squad evolution following another La Liga title-winning campaign.

For Tottenham, the situation adds another layer of uncertainty to an already difficult season that has raised questions about squad balance and consistency. Any decision on Romero’s future is expected to depend heavily on Tottenham’s stance once the season concludes and whether they are willing to consider major defensive restructuring.
