Barcelona advisor Masip signals Flick deal close amid wide-ranging interview

Barcelona sporting commission member Enric Masip has indicated that head coach Hansi Flick's contract renewal is close to being finalised, while addressing the future of Robert Lewandowski.

Masip spoke to media on Thursday at a padel tournament in Barcelona, with super agent Pini Zahavi also in the city for meetings with the club. His comments covered the most pressing items on Barcelona's agenda as the season approaches its final weeks.

On Flick, whose current deal expires in June 2027, Masip was unambiguous.

"Everything is going very well. From what everyone has said, Flick has shown that he is very happy here, and the club is very pleased with him — so it is natural that it will reach a good conclusion. The deal is expected to be fully closed. The season is about to finish. The expectations and feelings are very positive on both sides."

On Lewandowski, who turns 38 in August and is out of contract this summer, Masip was careful but warm.

"We have to wait until the end of the season. He came at a difficult moment for the club and has given exceptional performance. He is at an age where he has to decide his future. Together, they have to look at what can be done in his situation."

Asked about Julián Álvarez — Barcelona's primary centre-forward target, who would cost Atletico Madrid upwards of €100million — Masip acknowledged the interest while stressing the priority is finishing the season first.

"Out of respect for the current squad, we have to be focused on finishing the season. Once that is done, both Deco and Flick will look at who can improve the team. Then you have to look at the economic parameters — we have always said Barcelona can handle situations and signings it considers appropriate. We are hopeful that will be the case, because it has been historically. Julián is liked by anyone who likes football — he is a truly great forward."

Masip also entered the debate around Real Madrid president Florentino Pérez's potential absence from Sunday's Clásico trophy presentation, should Barcelona clinch the title at the Bernabéu. He was diplomatic but pointed.

"Having the trophy presented seems right to me — the day you win is when the cup should be there. Our president is always where he needs to be. It would have to be something very serious not to go."

He extended the point when asked whether a no-show from Laporta would be judged differently.

"I can imagine it, because in this country certain things are looked at in one way or another. Everything the president does is scrutinised. This is what a club like Barcelona carries — it is a problem of envy and grudges."

On the unrest in Real Madrid's dressing room following the Valverde-Tchouaméni incident, Masip declined to pile on.

"I can speak about us. It is not good or ethical to talk about other people's problems. I imagine that in a club of Madrid's prestige, the pressure is so great that it is difficult to work when you are not winning."

Asked about Jose Mourinho — linked with Real Madrid — Masip was measured.

"When a team keeps changing manager, it means things are not going the way they should. Mourinho is a great coach, he has been at many clubs. His time at Madrid — we know it. If they want to sign him, let them sign him. I know him from my playing days. I have a good relationship with him, but everyone defends their own interests."

Barcelona can win La Liga on Sunday with a victory at the Bernabéu, three games before the season ends. The Clásico, as ever, is about more than football.
