Joan Laporta has launched a fresh attack on Real Madrid, accusing the club of trying to undermine Spanish football’s governing bodies while defending LaLiga president Javier Tebas amid their dispute over his comments about the club’s media coverage.

Speaking in Seville before Barcelona’s match against Real Betis, the Barcelona president criticised Real Madrid’s approach to LaLiga, the Technical Committee of Referees and the Spanish Football Federation.

“It seems they want to wreck everything. They want to wreck LaLiga, they want to wreck the Technical Committee of Referees. They are not happy with the Federation either; they are not happy with anything,” Laporta said.

His comments followed the row sparked by Tebas comparing the communication methods of Real Madrid and its television channel with propaganda techniques used by Joseph Goebbels, Nazi Germany’s minister of propaganda. Madrid responded by demanding Tebas’s immediate resignation as president of LaLiga and vice-president of the Spanish Football Federation.

Laporta offered unequivocal support for the league president, saying his experience would help him withstand Madrid’s criticism.

“We are lucky to have Javier Tebas as president of LaLiga. He has the experience these matters require and good judgement in dealing with the attacks Madrid is making,” Laporta said.

He also accused the Spanish club of looking for excuses rather than examining its own decisions.

“They are looking for a thousand excuses because they cannot accept the situation they are in, which has been brought about by their own decisions. They should engage in some self-criticism,” he said.

Laporta returned to the subject when asked about Madrid’s apparent frustration, saying he was largely uninterested in the club’s actions unless they affected Barcelona directly.

“I care little about what Real Madrid do, to put it mildly, as long as they do not interfere with Barça,” he said.

The Barcelona president also used the occasion to express his confidence in Hansi Flick’s squad ahead of a demanding run of fixtures. After facing Betis, Barcelona are due to meet Paris Saint-Germain in the Champions League before taking on Madrid in the Clásico.

“We have a fantastic team, a side that competes very well,” Laporta said, praising the talent and collective spirit within the squad and the work of sporting director Deco.

He described the PSG fixture as “the dream match for the world of football” and said Barcelona were eager to make a statement in Paris.

“I think we are the two teams in the best form and playing the best football. We have great hopes and ambitions to make our mark in Paris,” he said.

Laporta also recalled Barcelona’s 4-1 win over Galatasaray in Istanbul, saying the club was enjoying its current period of success with pride. He urged supporters to savour the moment as the team approached a sequence of matches that could shape its season.

The president’s comments add another layer to the growing tension between Barcelona and Madrid, with the Tebas dispute unfolding just days before the two rivals are due to meet on the pitch.
