Barca legend Xavi on coaching plans: I'll say it openly

Xavi Hernandez has revealed he would relish taking charge of a national team once the right opportunity arises, saying the role would fit better with his family life than a return to club management.

The former Barcelona coach, who has been out of work since leaving the Camp Nou in the summer of 2024, won the La Liga and Spanish Supercopa double in his first full season in charge of the club.

Speaking to RNE on the eve of the World Cup final between Spain and Argentina, Xavi explained why international management appeals to him at this stage of his career.

"A national team would suit me on a family level," he said. "A club wouldn't allow me to be with my family as much, and I have young children.

"I'll say it openly, it would suit me. I'm keen to take part as a coach in a World Cup, a European Championship, an Africa Cup of Nations, an Asian Cup..."

Xavi has been out of the dugout since his Barcelona exit, though his name has repeatedly been linked with vacancies at international level, including reported interest from Morocco amid uncertainty over Walid Regragui's future with the Atlas Lions.

He has continued to follow the game closely from the sidelines, and used the interview to praise several of his former players, describing Lamine Yamal, whom he handed his Barcelona debut at 15, as a generational talent capable of becoming the best player in the world.

Xavi's own playing career included winning the World Cup with Spain in 2010, and he has drawn comparisons between that golden generation and the current Spain squad that reached this year's final, praising their performance against France in the semi-final as one of the best he has seen from a Spanish side in years.

Having managed Barcelona for two and a half seasons before his departure, he remains one of the more prominent coaches currently without a job, and his openness about wanting to coach at a major international tournament suggests he could be tempted by the right vacancy sooner rather than later.

The 46-year-old has not returned to the touchline since leaving Barcelona, despite his managerial reputation being enhanced by the trophies won during his tenure. His comments will likely fuel further speculation about his next move, particularly given the timing of his remarks just as speculation continues to link him with vacant national team positions around the world, with his stated preference for international football now firmly on record.
