The Rojiblancos are enjoying an impressive campaign in La Liga, sitting just two points behind leaders Barcelona after 11 matches and one ahead of city rivals Real Madrid.
The club's gradual rebuilding and recruitment of younger players has helped restore their title ambitions, but Atlético are still looking to add a midfielder capable of combining tactical intelligence with defensive strength.
According to Football Transfers, Avdullahu has emerged as a leading target. The 22-year-old Kosovo international was already on Atlético's radar last summer, but Hoffenheim were unwilling to sanction his departure after making him a central figure in their plans.
The Bundesliga club signed Avdullahu from his boyhood team Basel in 2025, paying a reported €8 million for his services. He quickly established himself as an important presence in midfield, impressing with his ability to retain possession under pressure and dictate the tempo of matches.
Avdullahu also played a significant role in Hoffenheim's improvement, which culminated in a fifth-place finish last season following their previous campaign's relegation concerns.
His contract runs until 2031 and he has made 48 competitive appearances for the German club, scoring once and providing one assist. His importance to Hoffenheim means any potential move to Madrid is unlikely to be straightforward.
Atletico Madrid are also considering alternatives. Stefan Dzodic, the 21-year-old midfielder at Almería, and Arsenal's Mikel Merino, 30, are among the other names reportedly being monitored.
However, Avdullahu's age, playing style and experience in the Bundesliga make him an attractive option as Simeone continues to shape his squad for the seasons ahead.
