Julián Álvarez's future at Atlético Madrid remains unresolved, with Diego Simeone confirming his stance on the transfer saga hasn't changed before Wednesday's LaLiga opener.

Barcelona and Arsenal remain keen to sign the Argentina striker, but Atlético have shown no willingness to budge on their position, with Simeone using Tuesday's press conference to confirm Álvarez will be unavailable for the visit of Málaga.

"I still think the same way. I take care of the sporting aspect. We discuss it as we always do. On a sporting level, we need more training with him so that he is at his best. He's one of the best players, if not the best," Simeone told reporters.

Asked about the club's public stance on the matter, the Atletico Madrid head coach pointed to comments already made by ownership.

"I think if the club owner has spoken bluntly, I think there is nothing else to add. It's like when you go to court, there's nothing else to say. We take care of the man and the player. We understand that he is in no condition to play this match," he said, referring to the Málaga fixture.

Simeone went on to place the situation in the context of previous departures he has had to manage during his time in charge at the Metropolitano.

"I show great respect in every situation we faced... Griezmann, Diego Costa, and today Julián. I fully respect all opinions that anyone may express."

Álvarez joined Atlético from Manchester City in 2024 in a deal worth €85 million including bonuses, and has gone on to become one of the club's most important attacking players.

Barcelona are believed to be ready to offer around €100 million for the World Cup winner as they look for further attacking reinforcements following Robert Lewandowski's departure and Ferran Torres' move to Paris Saint-Germain, though Atlético have so far shown no indication of being willing to sell.
