Aston Villa are closing in on a new deal for Emiliano Buendía, while Victor Lindelöf and teenage midfielder George Hemmings are also discussing contract extensions.

Buendía’s current contract is due to expire at the end of the season, but his improved role under Unai Emery has strengthened the case for fresh terms. The Athletic reported earlier this month that negotiations were advancing, and an agreement is now understood to be close.

The Argentine’s time at Villa Park has been shaped by a serious injury and a difficult return. He joined from Norwich City in 2021, but an anterior cruciate ligament injury suffered before the 2023-24 season kept him out for the entire campaign.

Buendía struggled to recover his rhythm after returning and spent the second half of the 2024-25 season on loan at Bayer Leverkusen. The German club did not activate its option to make the move permanent.

He has since re-established himself in Emery’s plans. Buendía made 54 appearances last season and supplied a number of memorable long-range goals, including Villa’s second in their Europa League final victory over Freiburg in May.

Lindelöf is also making progress towards a new agreement, with his existing contract set to run out next summer. The Swedish defender is among the senior players whose futures Villa are looking to settle.

Hemmings’ situation is different. The 19-year-old signed a five-year contract in 2025, but his rapid progress into the first team has prompted discussions about a possible extension that would reflect his growing status.

Hemmings started Villa’s first five matches of the campaign, including August’s Super Cup final defeat to Paris Saint-Germain, marking a significant step in his development.

Aston Villa had intended to advance talks with several key players after the summer transfer window closed. Ian Maatsen remains in discussions over a new contract, while the club must also consider what comes next for Tyrone Mings, Ross Barkley and Marco Bizot, whose current deals are due to expire at the end of the season.
