Aston Villa came from behind to beat Sevilla 3-1 and lift the Antonio Puerta Trophy as Unai Emery celebrated a winning return to his former club.

Aston Villa came from behind to beat Sevilla 3-1 and lift the Antonio Puerta Trophy after a second-half turnaround at the Ramón Sánchez-Pizjuán.

Isaac Romero gave the hosts the lead seven minutes after half-time, but Villa responded with three goals to secure victory in Unai Emery’s return to his former club.

Ross Barkley equalised in the 71st minute after intercepting a pass and racing through on goal before Alejandro Garnacho put Villa ahead.

Academy midfielder Max Jenner then completed the comeback with seven minutes remaining, beating a defender with a clever feint before slotting the ball home.

Emery was honoured before kick-off on his return to Sevilla, where he won three consecutive Europa League titles.

Villa created chances during a goalless first half, with Emi Buendía testing the hosts and Tammy Abraham denied on his 28th birthday.

Sevilla also threatened, with Chidera Ejuke going close and Marco Bizot required to make several saves.

Emery made five changes at half-time, with Pau Torres and Brian Madjo both gaining minutes after injury, but Villa fell behind when Romero followed up after Taylor Harwood-Bellis blocked a shot from Peque Fernández.

The response was emphatic. Barkley restored parity with a powerful finish before Garnacho completed his strong display by converting Alysson’s low cross.

Jenner then put the finishing touch to the victory, providing another positive moment for Villa’s academy.

The result gives Emery’s side a useful competitive test before the Premier League resumes at home to Brentford next weekend.

The victory also gave several players returning from injury valuable minutes and allowed Emery to assess younger options during the international break. Villa’s next competitive fixture comes at Villa Park, where Brentford provide the opposition when Premier League football resumes.
