Unai Emery hailed a “fantastic night” after Aston Villa thrashed Fenerbahçe 6-0, recording their biggest victory in major European competition and making it two Champions League wins from two.

Johan Manzambi opened the scoring on his 21st birthday before Nicolas Jackson struck twice to put Villa firmly in control at half-time. Ross Barkley added a second-half brace, and Tammy Abraham completed the rout in the 90th minute.

Emery was delighted to share another memorable European occasion with the Villa Park crowd, while stressing that his team still have improvements to make.

“Fantastic night, fantastic,” he said. “Champions League is the competition where we can feel comfortable and competing in the direction we did today, the direction we did in the first match against Brugge.

“Of course, it’s very difficult. We are not contenders to get this trophy. There are a lot of teams, very important teams and very powerful teams to be contenders and to be favourites to win this competition.

“But two years ago, we achieved quarter-finals through our consistency, through our ambitions, through our demands, and how we started this season in this competition is really fantastic.”

Villa’s performance also offered encouragement to Emery as summer arrivals and returning players continued to settle into his structure.

“Big contributions from those players, but as well, some changes. We need to add players competing, getting fit, feeling comfortable in our structure,” he said.

“Some ones, they are progressively getting better and showing it like Mbaye, like Manzambi – of course, after his injury, he is progressively feeling comfortable, today he scored one goal.

“Nicolas Jackson, as well, he is feeling better and better. But we need more players.”

Fenerbahçe coach İsmail Kartal was unhappy with the manner of the defeat, particularly the mistakes that allowed Villa to take control.

“The first and second halves didn't deserve this result. But you're competing at the highest level. You shouldn't make such simple passing errors. My players and I have learned very important lessons. This is not an acceptable score,” Kartal said.

He felt his side remained competitive until the penalty that made it 4-0, after which the match slipped away.

“The team reacted well until the 62nd minute. After the penalty was scored, the game fell apart due to mistakes we made. We need to forget this. We still have a lot of matches to play in the Champions League. We want to beat Alanyaspor in three days and help our fans forget this defeat.”

For Emery, attention quickly turns to Saturday’s visit to Newcastle United.

“Hopefully, those improvements we achieved today, and as well how we are progressing, getting better but not being enough, hopefully we will achieve again on Saturday against Newcastle,” he said.
