Manchester United travel to the Metropolitano after winning just one of their first six Premier League matches. Their 1-1 draw against Tottenham on Saturday followed a League Cup exit to Brighton, leaving Carrick under increasing scrutiny.
The United head coach, however, rejected the suggestion that the situation had become a disaster, pointing to the team’s response after half-time against Spurs as evidence that his players remain committed to turning things around.
“I understand people thinking it’s a disaster, but that’s not in our mindset. You’ve got to be able to deal with it,” Carrick said.
“The last three goals we’ve conceded, we could have done something about them. That can be the difference. I love this part when it’s not going against you. The fans are there and we’ve got to give them something. We will come through it.”
United will have to do so without Luke Shaw and Kobbie Mainoo, who have not travelled to Spain after picking up injuries against Tottenham. Carrick confirmed that neither would be available for the match.
Benjamin Šeško’s condition also remains uncertain, with the manager waiting for further medical tests before providing a timeframe for the striker’s return.
There was more encouraging news concerning Matthijs de Ligt, who travelled with the squad after returning to training following a lengthy absence with a back injury. Carrick said the defender’s return was a positive development, although United would need to manage his comeback carefully.
Carlos Baleba is another option in midfield following his debut against Tottenham. Carrick praised the midfielder’s contribution and said he offered something different to the balance of the team, but stopped short of confirming whether he would start in Mainoo’s absence.
Leny Yoro, who joined Carrick at the press conference, expressed respect for Atletico Madrid manager Diego Simeone and the team he has built.
“To build takes time. The fact he’s been here so long, you can see his mark on this team. They’re really dangerous. It’s a great test for us,” the defender said.
Yoro also confirmed he was comfortable filling in at right-back when required, adding that players must be prepared to adapt to different positions.
Carrick insisted United were not approaching the match with a negative mindset, despite their domestic difficulties.
“There’s no negativity, we’re embracing the challenge,” he said. “There’s going to be times when it’s a struggle and if you can’t do something difficult and get through it, you’re not going to succeed.”
United will need to turn that conviction into a performance against an experienced Atletico side, with Carrick demanding a stronger start and a response that gives supporters reason for optimism.
