Arsenal are reportedly pursuing Club Tijuana prospect Gilberto Mora, with former Mexico defender Claudio Suárez saying the plan could involve signing him before a loan move.

The 18-year-old has attracted growing attention after his progress at Club Tijuana and with Mexico’s senior side.

Suárez told Unanimo that Arsenal and Bayern Munich had both presented the 18-year-old with what he described as attractive projects, with Arsenal’s proposal reportedly involving a transfer followed by a loan.

“I know for a fact that he’s had offers,” Suárez said. “Arsenal showed interest, and so did Bayern Munich. Arsenal’s plan was to sign him and then loan him out, since he might not have been a starter for them right away. I happen to know that both Arsenal and Bayern presented him with a great project.”

Mora has emerged as one of Mexico’s most highly regarded young players, scoring 15 goals in 62 appearances for Tijuana and making his senior international debut. He also featured for Mexico at the 2026 World Cup.

Suárez believes the next step in Mora’s development should come in Europe, where a move could expose him to different training methods and help him adapt to a new footballing environment.

“The truth is that Gil Mora’s situation is unique—the kind that comes along once in a very long while,” he said. “He’s extraordinary, both because of his age and the entire development path he’s been on since Juan Carlos Osorio gave him his debut. If it were up to me, I’d let him go.”

He added: “He needs to head to Europe to start gaining that kind of experience. It wouldn’t be the end of the world if things didn’t go well—though I personally believe he’ll do very well. It’s just a matter of finding the right club—somewhere he can adapt quickly and where he’ll be well supported.”

Suárez said the change could help Mora grow even if he does not immediately play regularly for a major European club.

“Just being over there—being in Europe—helps you grow. It’s not easy being on your own, even if your family is with you. The training methodologies are different from what’s used in Mexico. I think things are a bit more relaxed in Mexico. So this move could really help Gil Mora right from the start.”

A loan could offer Arsenal a way to secure a highly rated prospect while allowing him to gain experience elsewhere before competing for a first-team place.
