William Saliba has revealed he has been playing through pain for several months, with the Arsenal defender admitting he is not at 100 per cent ahead of France second World Cup group game against Iraq.

Arsenal have been handed an injury concern after Saliba admitted he has been playing through pain, with the centre-back currently representing France at the World Cup.

Saliba started France's opening 3-1 win over Senegal alongside Bayern Munich's Dayot Upamecano in central defence, and is one of Les Bleus' regular starters in North America this summer.

Speaking to reporters on Saturday ahead of France's second group game against Iraq in Philadelphia, Saliba revealed the extent of his physical struggles.

"I've had some minor niggles for several months," Saliba said. "I've been gritting my teeth because there was the Champions League and the Premier League.

"But the coaching staff are handling it very well. The World Cup comes round only once every four years, so you've got to grit your teeth."

He added that he was far from alone in carrying knocks into the tournament.

"I'm not at 100 per cent, but there are plenty of players who aren't at 100 per cent either โ€” you can't make excuses," Saliba said.

Saliba was a key figure for Arsenal throughout last season, as the club won its first Premier League title since 2004 and reached the Champions League final, where they lost on penalties to Paris Saint-Germain in Budapest.

He played 50 games in all competitions for Arsenal, scoring once against Chelsea, with his only assist of the campaign coming in a Carabao Cup third-round win over League One side Port Vale.

The admission will raise questions over how much rest Saliba will be afforded once he returns to pre-season training with Arsenal, given the scale of his workload over the course of last season and the ongoing physical strain he has carried into this summer's tournament.
