Arsenal and Napoli are reportedly monitoring Gustavo Varela after the 21-year-old striker made a prolific start to the season with Monza.

The Portuguese forward joined Monza from Benfica for a reported €2 million and has quickly established himself as one of the most productive young attackers in Serie A. He has scored six goals in six league appearances, with a further two in the Coppa Italia.

According to La Gazzetta dello Sport, Napoli have already shown interest in Varela, while Arsenal have also been alerted by his performances. The reports suggest the striker’s form could put him in contention for a move to a bigger club, although neither side has publicly confirmed an approach.

Varela’s scoring record has made him an important asset for Monza, who are unlikely to be eager to part with a player they need to help achieve their objectives this season. His value could rise further if he maintains his current level.

The transfer arrangements with Benfica may also shape any future negotiations. The Portuguese club reportedly do not have a buy-back clause, meaning Monza would retain control over whether to sell. However, Benfica are understood to have the right to match future offers and a 20 per cent share of the profit from a sale.

Varela is under contract with Monza until the summer of 2030, giving the Italian club a strong position should interest develop into formal bids.

The forward has also represented Portugal at under-21 level, scoring four goals in seven appearances. His early impact in Italy has now brought him into the orbit of clubs with greater financial resources, but the current links remain at the monitoring and reported-interest stage.

For Monza, the immediate priority will be keeping Varela producing on the pitch. With his goals already attracting attention beyond Italy, the club may face a more difficult task retaining him if his form continues through the season.
