Leeds United captain Ethan Ampadu collected the Player of the Match award after a hard-fought 1-1 draw at Tottenham Hotspur on Monday confirmed the promoted club's Premier League survival with two games remaining.

Dominic Calvert-Lewin's penalty cancelled out Mathys Tel's opener as Leeds United showed the same resilience that has defined their debut season back in the top flight. Ampadu spoke to the broadcast team at full-time and pointed immediately to a character trait that has carried Leeds through the campaign.

"Obviously we knew before the game it was going to be a very good, very difficult game. We knew they were going to start quick, their fans were going to be behind them โ€” as we know what they are trying to achieve."

He described the challenge of going behind at a Tottenham ground with a raucous atmosphere before his side found a way back.

"To go one-nil down here, with the atmosphere how it is, it can be very difficult. But I think one thing we have shown all the way through the season is that great determination to get back into the game."

The Wales international is clear-eyed about where Leeds stand in the context of their development, and in no mood to get carried away despite the landmark moment of confirming survival.

"I think we have shown from the very start that we want to achieve a lot of success here. We know it is going to be a long way to go and we definitely can't get carried away just yet. We need to put a lot of hard work in. We've got two games to finish off this season very strong and build some positivity into next year."

Ampadu has been Leeds's most consistent performer across the season, organising a defence that has managed to stay competitive in a division where they were widely expected to struggle. The result means Leeds will be in the Premier League next season regardless of what happens in their final two fixtures.

For the club's returning supporters, survival this year is the foundation. Ampadu's message was simple โ€” the work has only started.
