Former Tottenham Hotspur defender Alan Hutton has criticised the handling of Cristian Romero’s situation, insisting private matters should never be played out publicly — particularly during a crisis period for the club.

Hutton, speaking to Football Presse on behalf of Betway, said: “I don’t like it.

“I can only put myself in the shoes of when I was playing — if my dad was coming out and saying stuff about my contract details and how I was feeling to the press, I wouldn’t have it.”

Romero, who has taken on a leadership role at Tottenham, has been at the centre of attention following comments from his father suggesting a potential departure, with the club battling near the bottom end of the table.

For Hutton, the issue is not just the content — but the timing and the manner in which it has emerged.

“I would have shut it down instantly,” he said. “That’s just a no-go.

“You just don’t speak about those sorts of things, especially conversations that might have been behind closed doors — and especially when Tottenham are in this situation.”

With pressure mounting on and off the pitch, Hutton believes unity is essential — and public noise only makes things worse.

“This is a moment where you have to come together as a unit, as a group and as a club to fight and get out of this situation,” he said.

“Those sorts of things will be dealt with at the end of the season.”

Hutton acknowledged there may be cultural differences in how such situations are handled, but stressed that standards within the club must remain clear.

“I don’t know whether it’s maybe a foreign thing or they’re used to being like that in their own country,” he said. “I can’t comment on that.

“But I just feel your captain and vice-captain — are they doing it because they’re trying to show that they care?”

He also referenced incidents involving teammate Micky van de Ven, warning against emotional reactions spilling into the public domain.

“When he’s arguing with fans or whatever, I just don’t believe that’s the right way,” Hutton said.

Instead, Hutton called for focus, discipline and leadership from within the dressing room.

“You have to come together, block out the outside noise that you can, and don’t make it worse,” he said.

“Don’t add fuel to the fire by telling people about your contract situation and that you might leave in the summer.”

Ultimately, Hutton believes actions on the pitch are what matter most — especially in difficult moments.

“Just work hard and show them that you care,” he said. “Give 100% on the pitch every single week.

“If you lose games doing that, the fans can normally forgive you — but it’s when it doesn’t look that way that it becomes very difficult.”

And for Tottenham’s leaders, his message is clear.

“As the leaders of the club, you need to keep everything in-house — not allow it to get out.”
