Mattia Zaccagni offered a frank and remorseful assessment in the immediate aftermath of Lazio's 2-0 Coppa Italia final defeat to Inter Milan, admitting that the club failed to show the character the occasion demanded.

An Adam Marusic own goal and a Lautaro Martínez finish before half-time put Inter Milan firmly in control at the Stadio Olimpico, and a Lazio side that had also lost 3-0 to Inter in Serie A at the same venue just four days earlier could not find a way back. The defeat also cost Lazio their last chance of Europa League qualification this season.

Zaccagni, the club captain who was substituted off in the 72nd minute as manager Maurizio Sarri chased the game, spoke directly to supporters who had returned to the stands after months of boycott.

"I want to say that we are deeply sorry. Tonight we could have given something great to the Lazio supporters, but it went badly. We faced a team that is clearly superior to us, but the character should not have been missing — and at times in the first half, it was. In the second half we had some chances, but too few."

He deflected blame from Marusic, who scored the opening own goal, and Nuno Tavares, whose error led directly to Martínez's second.

"We were all disappointed and devastated by the evening. Nuno and Adam have to be as well, like the others. Unfortunately errors happen in matches. But it is not a question of errors — it is a question of the attitude shown in some moments of the game."

He also placed the wider context of the season honestly.

"Both times we went two goals down and it is always difficult to come back from that. In the second halves we had the chances to get back into both games, but I repeat — too few. Not enough initiative, not enough courage, and we have to take responsibility for that."

On the Roma derby, which arrives as Lazio's final home game of the season.

"Another match like tonight for which you do not need to find particular motivation. Tonight we take the disappointment home with us, and tomorrow when we meet we will start talking about the derby. Even if it has been a negative season, we have to hold our heads up and try to finish it as well as possible."
